My Journey
My cancer journey began on a summer afternoon in June 2019 when I was taking a shower. My first thought when I felt the lump under my left armpit was denial. 'No,' I told myself as I stood in shock under the water. 'I didn't really feel that!' But I knew I had. There could be no doubt. There was a lump, more like the size of a very large marble than the pea-sized one that people often spoke about. And, like anyone, I was terrified.
I had the biopsy just three weeks later, and even then I was told that it didn't look good. The woman's exact words? I'm very concerned.
So was I.
Not long later, I was told I had cancer and that it was present in my breast, armpit and lymph nodes. In other words, I was fucked. However, it would be another three weeks before I was told which type of cancer I had. The reason for this was that I was borderline between two rarer forms of breast cancer: triple negative and triple positive, and neither is good. I had my left breast removed at the end of July and was booked in for several rounds of intense chemotherapy.
